New REG Yacht Code Launching Soon

The Isle of Man Ship Registry, together with our Partners in the Red Ensign Group, are pleased to launch the new ‘Red Ensign Yacht Code’ (‘the Code’) at the Global Superyacht Forum taking place in Amsterdam between 13-16 November 2017. The event will be attended by Director Dick Welsh and Principal Surveyor Angus Lamming. Angus will also be hosting a workshop to provide guidance to industry on the implementation of the Code.

The Code consolidates two existing codes, LY3 and the Passenger Yacht Code, into a single user friendly format. As with the existing codes, the Code is an equivalence to the SOLAS, STCW and Loadline Conventions. The new Code will consist of the following sections:

  • Part A, an updated version of LY3 (for commercial yachts >24m, certified to carry 12 passengers or less)
  • Part B, an updated version of the Passenger Yacht Code (for yachts of any size, certified to carry 13-36 passengers)
  • A set of common annexes, to cover subjects such as helicopter landing areas and new designs of battery systems for use in propulsion

The new code has been updated with the latest international requirements and has been developed in partnership with yachting industry. This has been achieved whilst ensuring continuity with the existing codes. For instance, the Code makes increased use of ‘Goal Based Standards’ and ‘Alternative Design and Arrangements’ to allow builders to make use of more innovative design features.

Copies of the Code will be available online at www.iomshipregistry.com from the date of the launch. More information on GSF can be found at www.globalsuperyachtforum.com.
